Inception Review

If you haven’t watched it yet, do go watch Inception before you watch anything else. It’s been a long time since I really felt completely satisfied with watching a movie at the cinema. For those who have watched it but are a still a bit confused, check out the spoiler bits for my further analysis.

Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ellen Page, Ken Watanabe
Director: Christopher Nolan
Genre: Action/ Adventure
Language: English
Release Date:15 July 2010
Running Time:148 minutes
Distributor:WB
Rating: (Singapore – PG Violence)

Synopsis
Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is can extract valuable secrets hidden in the subconscious while someone is sleeping. Because of this skill, he was framed as a criminal and became an international fugitive. In an attempt to clear his name, he agrees to work for an extremely wealthy corporate figure. Instead of stealing secrets, he is instructed to implant an idea into someone’s head, something that was deemed impossible by most.

Action Element
In an action-adventure movie, you’d expect tons of action. Inception delivers with a different series of fire and combat action. Not only is it exciting but also a bit tipsy-turvy at times, when the bodies of those dreaming are violently moved.

Visuals
If the trailer didn’t convince you on how cool the effects are, I’m not sure how else to convince you. Check out this pic! You can check out their pictures and a bunch of other goodies on the official Inception Facebook page.

Underanswered Questions (Spoilers! NOT recommended if you haven’t watched the movie.)

Help! How does inception and extraction work? I totally don’t understand it!
Everyone is connected and go into someone’s dream. However, the setting is controlled by an architect. The dreamer’s subconscious fills up the location with projections, images of people. The projections become violent and track down foreign elements in the dream, basically the other people who come along into the dream. This is why the architect must be good and create a good maze to buy them time before the projections can reach them.

Extraction is when they try to get some information from the dreamer. Usually, the dreamer will dream of some kind of safe and the information will be inside the safe. Inception, is trying to implant an idea into someone’s head and was thought to have been impossible. However, Cobb managed to do it to his wife and again in his last mission.

You can get out of a dream by kick, the sensation of falling or by killing yourself. However, in the mission, shooting themselves was not an option because they were down too many levels and the dosage was too strong. If you go in too deeply, you can get lost in limbo where you forget reality. You know if you are in the dream world or in reality based on your totem.

Is he in reality or a dream at the ending?
It doesn’t explicitly tell us in the movie. However, the point of him leaving the totem without checking if it drops or not show has he has changed from caring about reality and just being with his kids. The following clues suggest that he is indeed back in reality:
1. He is not wearing his wedding ring, which you see on when he is in a dream.
2. The children are actually played by different children at the end of the movie.
3. Although the clothes are similar, they are indeed different clothes.
4. He actually gets to see their faces.

  1. If only more writers were like you. This is pretty fascinating stuff.

  2. Thanks for this post. It’s very useful.

  3. Leonardo DiCaprio as Dom Cobb in Inception is outstanding…he just keeps coming up with winners doesn’t he!

  4. It makes sense that he’s actually in reality at the end, but just doesn’t want to know if it’s reality or not anymore because he’s with his kids and that’s the only thing that matters to him.

Uh actually I do have stills from the movie to prove otherwise but not only that, I watched the movie with both my eyes on the screen, AND not only that, they’re played by different actors too. What else do you need?
